Achievements
WHS Shines in Wearable Arts
Last week at Showquest at St James Theatre, Wellington High School proudly participated in Toi, the wearable art section of the event. Eighteen striking garments were showcased by 40 of our talented students, most of them from Year 9. It was a night full of creativity, fun, and celebration – with plenty of prizes to match! A special mention goes to Year 9 student Issac Driver, who co-won the coveted Star of the Night award with one of the most wonderfully unusual garments we’ve ever seen.
SGCNZ VUW National Shakespeare Festival 2025
Since the beginning of term 2, WHS Arts Coordinator Tama has worked with a group of ten WHS students, predominantly from the international department in collaboration with the NZ Refugee Youth Council to perform a 15 minute production of A Stranger’s Case. The piece used Shakespeare’s words to explore the ongoing plight of displaced people worldwide. This piece was one of two selected from the region to represent Te Whanganui-a-Tara at the 34th SGCNZ National Festival at the historic St James Theatre over King’s Birthday Weekend. This incredibly talented group of performers received the following awards at the national event:
- Most Original Choice of Play award
- Most Imaginative and innovative Production Trophy
- Extraordinary Performance Trophy
- Most Thought Provoking Performance Trophy
Congratulations to Rachel Craig, Anna Lucia De Santis, Albert Lu, Sophie Olshevskaya, Kasira Vincent, Calista Feng, Sophia Das, Karen Shimamura, Ben Gutsmann, and Eru Walker-Love for their outstanding work, courage, and collaboration.
Worm Farm and Donations
Our five worm farms in the horticulture garden have been such a huge success that it took us just one term to fill them all. We have a lot of organics that our tiger worms love getting through, making valuable soil in the process. If you need worms for your worm farm at home, get in touch.
Our legendary team who we started employing at the start of the year to empty our recycling and compost bins twice a week from the over 100 bin stations across the school, incredibly important mahi that enables us to reduce what we send to landfill. Our team is made up of four year 12 students: Miro Ireson, Seb Crowe, Lily Hovey and Hannah Patterson. Big ups to them!
Our current worm farms that we recently harvested a bit of soil from. We are using this rich and fertile soil in the horticulture garden to get our winter vegetables growing. Having five more of these worm farms will help our kaupapa.
We urgently need another 5 worm farms to get us through this year and are looking for donations to fund these. $350 each from Mitre 10 – Please get in touch if you are able to help out: set@whs.school.nz
Sports
Junior Netball Tournament
Our junior netball team represented WHS with pride at the College Sport Wellington (CSW) Junior Netball Tournament, held on Thursday at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre. It was a full day of competition, and the team gave it their all across six closely contested games – a fantastic effort that reflects both their determination and teamwork. The players showed great sportsmanship, resilience, and a positive attitude throughout the day, continuing to build on their skills and connections as a team.
A huge thank you to our dedicated team manager and coach for their time, support, and encouragement.
Well done to everyone involved! We’re proud of your effort and spirit on the court.
Underwater Hockey
Our senior Underwater Hockey Teams Dive Back In After Tournament Weekend.
After a big weekend at the NICC tournament in Rotorua, our senior underwater hockey teams were back in the pool on Tuesday night. Despite a few players out with illness and injury, the teams put on a solid performance.
The Senior Girls A team played two matches, starting with a friendly clash against our own Senior Girls B team. It was a great opportunity for both sides to develop their game, with the B team showing off some impressive passing and trying out new skills in the water. The A team then took on the SCOTS/Mary’s Composite team, finishing strong with a 7–2 win.
Meanwhile, the B team had a tough game against WGC Black, where they showed great teamwork and defensive play throughout the match.
The Senior Open team also had a busy night, taking on HVHS in their first game and securing a decisive 13–1 win. Their second match was a shield challenge against WC A. Despite their best efforts, they went down 0–5, but they’re keen for a rematch to win the shield back!
Upcoming: This weekend (June 6–8), our teams are heading into the Big Wellington Schools Central Tournament —at Kilbirnie regional aquatic centre. A major event on the underwater hockey calendar. We wish all our teams the best of luck for a successful and fun weekend of competition!
WHS Hockey
The Girls 2nd XI faced a tough match against Onslow’s 2nd XI, going down 0–2 despite a determined effort and some strong defensive play.
Meanwhile, the Girls 1st XI’s most recent game saw a solid 1–1 draw against Naenae College. The team dominated much of the match, showing great control and teamwork throughout.
The Boys 1st XI had a bye this week but are looking forward to returning to the turf next round.
Well done to all teams for their continued commitment and sportsmanship.
Badminton
Our Badminton Season is Well Underway!
The 2025 badminton season is off to a fantastic start, with both our competitive and social teams showing great form and enthusiasm on the court. Our competitive players have been putting in strong performances across their respective grades, demonstrating skill, teamwork, and determination in every match.
Meanwhile, our social teams have embraced the spirit of the game, with excellent participation and a great sense of camaraderie each week. It’s been exciting to see players of all levels enjoying the sport, improving their game, and representing WHS with pride.
We look forward to seeing how the rest of the season unfolds.
A massive thank you to our dedicated coaches, parents and ambassadors for making it all possible.
