Talking to your young person about grooming
Grooming is a form of abuse that can take place in person or online. It is where a person seeks to build a relationship with a young person with the intention of manipulating them. The resulting abuse is usually sexual or financial but can include other illegal acts. WHS are aware that reports have been made to the Wellington Police regarding grooming behaviour observed in the city centre and on public transport.
Below are some websites that may support you in talking to your young person to protect and safeguard them from grooming:

What’s happening
Support Staff lunch
Friday 16 May was NZEI’s Support Staff day across Aotearoa. Fifteen of the WHS Support Staff have worked here for more than 10 years, representing a total of 274 years of service to the school. All were recognised by Principal, Dominic Killalea and Business Manager, Sue Kemp during a lunch for the support staff team.
Pictured are Toni Jones who has worked at WHS for 27 years, cleaning and taking care of the WHS staffroom. Toni’s history with WHS is one of the longest on the staff, as she is also a former student. Frances Poff, of the Community Education Centre, has been at WHS for 25 years.
Sport
Australian Youth Climbing Nationals
We would like to commend Quinn who competed in the Australian Youth Climbing Nationals from 14-16 May. Quinn has submitted a commentary on his experience below:
“Recently I went to Australia for the Australian Youth Climbing Nationals. I was there representing New Zealand. It was a really great experience and I met a ton of great climbers from Australia and New Zealand. I was very happy to make finals. Even though I didn’t do as well as I would have liked, I was almost at the podium and I know that I will do better next year!” (Quinn Boetzelen-McIntyre)
Cross country
This week, students from Wellington High School took part in the Cross Country Championships held at Harcourt Park. Well done to all involved, representing the school with great determination and school spirit.
Hockey
The Boys 1st XI won 5-0 against the Whitby mixed team. They played well as a team, communicating through the layers. Girls 1st XI won 5-0 against Upper Hutt 1st XI. Played their best game yet, switching the side of play and pressing hard when defending. Girls 2nd XI lost 2-3 against Scots 2nd XI. It was an incredibly close game, and they played amazingly as a team! Well done teams.
Football
The Girls XI won against Heretaunga College 2 – 0, although we were playing through rain and mud the team managed to pass around the opposition. Well played team.
Under water hockey
WHS senior underwater hockey teams had a great time at the pool on Tuesday night. Our Yellow B team is showing fantastic progress each week, with new players stepping up and even scoring goals—an awesome sign of growing confidence and skill! The senior girls A Green team had a tough loss against Wellington Girls College after maintaining the shield for the past month. They are ready to fight back for it in a good match in upcoming games! The senior boys team played a great game against HIBS. Well done to all teams—keep up the momentum!
