Year 13 Drama production – next week!

A dark comedy that reimagines modern warfare, ‘There is a War’ is a series of increasingly absurd situations that highlight the cynical way in which nations engage in conflict with no regard for the human cost.

Shows are next week at 6pm from Monday 1 to Wednesday 3 September.  Tickets are $5/$10 and available here on at this url: https://www.trybooking.com/nz/YWW

Wellington High Battle of the Bands

Sunday, 31 August from 4-7pm at Meow, 9 Edward Street

Get your tickets for an unforgettable afternoon of music and energy as Wellington High’s talented bands take the stage to battle it out! This is more than any school gig – it’s a chance to see our creative akonga step confidently into Te Whanganui-a-Tara’s vibrant music scene.

Last year’s event, held at the professional music venue Meow, was a complete sell-out.  This year promises to be just as electric. With original songs, crowd-favourite covers, and the passion of our young musicians, it’s the perfect opportunity to support our rangatahi as they light up a real stage.  Don’t miss it!

Achievements

Writing awards

Maytal Noy’s short story has been shortlisted for the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award. This is very exciting and we will share the story with the community after the awards ceremony.

Nga Ingoa I Te Rangi – The Names in the Sky by Maia Hill was a runner up for the New Zealand Schools’ Poetry Award.

You can read Maia’s wonderful poem on this link. Esteemed poet and judge, Ruby Solly, had this to say about Maia’s poem:  ‘Nga Ingoa I Te Rangi – The Names In The Sky’ by Maia Hills (Year 13, Wellington High School) is an eloquent and passionate kōrero that represents so many Māori across the generations. The sense of anger partnered with strength in this poem is perfectly balanced alongside the reo that has been used. Kupu Māori are placed, taonga-like, amongst English rerenga, showing how precious our reo is, and providing the reader with seeds of hope amidst the strength and challenges of the author. ‘My ribs echo haka I never screamed’ is a sentence that will live on in me each time I haka, especially in the moments I don’t feel as strong as I would like, kā mihi e Maia, this is such a gift to others like us.

Mahi tika ana to both these developing writers.
