Important Information
Extended Absence Notifications
If your student will be away from school for an extended period, please notify the Principal via admin@whs.school.nz. This enables us to track student absences ensuring they are categorised correctly and the relevant staff notified. It also means that whānau understand implications for their student e.g. in terms of NCEA assessment etc.
Doors open 8am
This week we have had a number of students arriving at school as early as 7am. Our doors do not open until 8am so students should not be arriving before then to avoid being out in the cold.
What’s Happening
WHS Counselling Department
We are excited to announce that the official new name for our counselling department is now: Kia Tū Māia. There was a small ceremony to celebrate this on Wednesday morning. For us, Kia Tū Māia means ‘to stand confidently’ reflecting our department’s aim to develop people’s capabilities and resilience and support them to grow and develop as a person. In relation to this, the counsellors are kaiwhakamāia, who help to build people’s confidence and our associated whakataukī is ‘Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui’ – Be strong, be brave, be steadfast. Ākonga studying Toi Māori worked together to create our new logo:

Achievements
Wellington Half Marathon
Shout out to Will Cleaver-Paris (Year 12) for his phenomenal achievement in the Wellington half marathon last month. Will smashed the course in a time of 1:19:35, placing him 2nd in the U20 division and 52nd out of the 926 participants. To give this some perspective to non-runners, that is 1km per 3m 45s maintained across the 21km course.
LEGO Robocup Regional Competition
On Sunday 29th Wellington High School hosted the LEGO Robocup Regional competition. Two pf our students, Jet and Callum, placed first place for ‘onstage novice’ with their team ‘useless robots’.
From Tuhura Tech who ran the event emailed Mr Barrow, saying “Huge thanks to Wellington High School for generously providing the space, and to all the tamariki, mentors, and whānau who made the day so special.” We are also looking forward to seeing some of these amazing teams head to nationals, run by the Ministry of Inspiration!
WHS a new approach to waste
No visitor to WHS can have missed the recycling and composting bins that are present (and extremely well used) in every area of our kura. Behind the project is Year 9 Dean and Social Studies Tina Stolze who, this week, has been featured in the Enviroschools project write up ‘Wellington High School: a new approach to waste’. This in-depth write up details just how much mahi Tina has undertaken to get the project from its inception in 2023 to where it is now. Ka rawe Tina!
