Welcome to 2018
On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Wellington High School we welcome new students and families to our school as well as welcoming back our current school families.
Congratulations to all students who sat NCEA exams at the end of last year. The Board are currently analysing the results from these exams to inform our decision making for the year. We encourage all parents and students to realise the importance that attending school has on learning. Attendance is vital for good grades and encouragement from home to come to school each day is a vital part of supporting all our young persons’ learning.
This year has already started in a busy way with the school preparing to host the Education Review Office (ERO) in our school, arriving on Monday 26th February. We look forward to the feedback that the ERO team can provide us.
The Board are working with the Senior Leadership team to review our Strategic and Annual plans. We invite parents to have a say in this as well and as such please respond to the survey that is included in this Weekly Wrap-Up below.
We continue to have some much needed construction work done in the school, in particular, in the school hall. A new fire alarm system upgrade will occur this term as well.
Finally, we encourage all new families to join our Te Whānau a Taraika. You are all welcome to attend the next hui which will be held in Taraika on Monday 19 February at 6pm.

What's been happening this week?
Pōwhiri for our new students
It was wonderful together under the trees by Taraika to welcome all our new students this year.
Below: A huge Welly High welcome to our 22 new students from China, Germany, Japan, Austria, Vietnam, Switzerland and the US! Orientation was lots of fun and now it’s time for classes!
Below: Base 1 students are entering the world of robotics. This week they are putting the components together and, once built, they will learn to programme them. Check out the concentration. Rossi is working with us in the Base this year teaching the new Digital Technologies curriculum. AND great bread making!
Below: Year 9 Royal students all together on their second day at Welly High
Below: Each year the library commissions a Year 13 art student to produce a work to adorn the library walls. Honey Brown, who took level 3 Sculpture last year, is the recipient of this commission for 2017 . This artwork is a photograph of her video work and is now on view in the Library.

Informatics Summer Camp
Eli Martin, in year 10 attended a New Zealand Olympiad Informatics summer camp from 6 January to 12 January held in Christchurch. Students stayed in a university hostel (Bishop Julius) and attended lectures and practice sessions in labs at Canterbury University. We were sent an email from the coordinator who remarked on the way the students conducted themselves in what was an ‘intensive learning experience’. There is the hope that Eli may be selected to represent New Zealand at the International Olympiad in Informatics to be held in Tsukuba, Japan in September this year. Watch this space!
Japanese Ambassador’s Commendation Award
Sharon Henry, our Head of Languages and one of our Japanese teachers, has been awarded the Japanese Ambassador’s Commendation Award for Services to Japanese Language Education in New Zealand. This is the first time it has been awarded to a teacher. Sharon is one of ten recipients of the award from both the tertiary and the secondary sectors. Recipients are both New Zealand and Japanese nationals.
