Wellington High School
Te Kura Tuarua o Taraika ki Pukeahu
Whanau Hui : Term 4 2017
24 October 2017

2018 will see introduction of compulsory Te Ao/Reo Maori in year 9. Teachers Anna and Whakamarurangi will teach classes at the same time and hopefully in/using Taraika. Students will have 2 hours per week for whole year. The course will include tikanga, te reo, possibly also include performing arts/kapa haka. This news has been promoted to existing school population/roll but not yet external audience (at date of this hui).

Dominic is keen to identify individuals who can support school te reo teaching with stories. Names of individuals should be referred to Dominic or Whakamarurangi.

Discussion of idea to support year 9 parents/whanau with te reo in parallel. Discussion of possible noho. Timing best after term 1 2018 to allow Anna and Whakamarurangi to get their feet under the table with the new course.

Discussed possible bilingual signage around school. Budget constraints. Lots of support around table. Dominic/property will progress this.

Group wants to confirm whether there is a minute/motion to ensure Whanau a Taraika representation on Board of Trustees. Annette to check Board minutes.

Taraika development needs to be progressed. Those interested in development of Taraika design/art should attend next Whanau hui (early 2018) to progress this.

Whakanuia Thursday 2 November 2017, 6pm.
